Arguably the finest mediaeval Guild Hall in England, there is so much to historically fascinate the visitor. The astonishing pair of tapestries in the Great Hall depict the meeting of Alexander the Great with King Darius the Third of Persia. Here too, the Great North Window fills almost an entire wall and look hard and you will find both statues of Godiva and St. George placed within the Oriel window in one of the corridors leading away from the Hall to its attandant rooms. The Mary Queen of Scots Room - so called because Mary Queen of Scots was held in this room between November 1569 and January 1570 - houses a letter from Queen Elizabeth I to the people of Coventry. The Old Council Chamber and Treasury also house treasures, including a remarkably preserved Gild Chair from 1470. The romance of St Mary's is not lost on the many couples who choose to be married here, whilst the crypt plays host to the new Godiva Tea Rooms serving a particularly fine selection of tea and pastries.
