In 1955 the Criterion players were formed and not until 1961 did they offcially move into the current theatre and complete their first performance. Since this date more than 350 performances have successfully taken place.  

The Criterion is 120 seat theatre which has 8 main productions per year. It relies on volunteers to provide a valuable service to the local community.

The Criterion has previously won the Godiva award for Best Theatre in 2005, 2007 and 2009.
